FORM SUBDIVISIONS CODED $v

J. McRee Elrod 28 October 1999

LC began in early 1999 distributing records with subject headings coded
$v for form divisions, e.g., $vPeriodicals. NLM began earlier, but has
changed to 655 for form headings. LC reconfigures as 6XX$v for MARC
distribution.

SLC has programmed to substitute "--" for 6XX$v in print and display
as we do now for $x, $y, and $z. We are considering in the future
substitution of some other symbol for the "--" before the form
subdivision. Yee, in her document for IFLA, suggests grouping. Our
customers prefer one alphabetical order.

In gearing up for this, two of our staff members objected to
$vCongresses and $vExhibitions, saying that these were events, not
forms. (They are indicated as form divisions in LC's "Free-floating
subdivisions ...) When I took this up with CPSO, their Lynn El-Hoshy
had some good news. A few years ago a Subcommittee on Nature and Use of
Form Data of the Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) of ALA investigated
issues regarding the representation of form data in bibliographic
records. Among the recommendations that SAC forwarded to LC at that time
was a recommendation that the ambiguity of certain form subdivisions in
LC subject strings be reduced. As examples, they recommended that
--Conference proceedings and --Exhibition catalogs be used as form
subdivisions rather than the currently used subdivisions --Congresses
and --Exhibitions. LC agreed that these subdivisions should be changed,
but deferred implementation of any changes until LC has a system with
global update capabilities.

Where a subdivision serves as both subject and form, two headings will
be created.

Following is the list of subdivisions to be changed to $v *if* they are
the last in the chain. For example, in $xMaps$vBibliography, Maps would
remain $x since what one has is a bibliopgraphy and not a map. Notice
that a few are given as double $v in the list, e.g.,
$vAutographs$vFacsimilies, since they would still be autographs.

*Where [Language] is inverted or in a phrase, it is safe to program "*".
For $x[Language], however, in our file check for $xEnglish, French,
German, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese, and flip the preceeding form
subdivision to $v, leaving the language $x. When other $x subdivisions
(e.g., $xHistory and criticism) follow a form subdivision, leave the
form subdivision $x. Other collections would of course have to add
other languages.

**It is safe to program "*" for the variable term or phrase.

***After Readers, check for $xHistory and criticism, and leave
$xReaders. For all other subdivisions after $xReaders, flip to
$vReaders.
